Empowering Communities with Breadfruit Agribusiness Training
Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.
Trees That Feed Foundation follows this mantra by helping entrepreneurs build agribusinesses centered around breadfruit. The flagship tree of this nonprofit, breadfruit fights food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty, and climate change.
As a college student in Jeremie, Haiti, Pierre-Moise Louis recognized the value of nutrient-rich, carbohydrate-loaded breadfruit. When Mary and Mike McLaughlin, TTFF co-founders, met Pierre-Moise in 2013, they put their trust in him and support behind him.
Pierre-Moise started with a wheelbarrow full of equipment provided by TTFF. Over the years, he has built a small-scale breadfruit flour factory and bakery. Now with his own tree nursery too, he helps farmers develop food forests in rural Haiti.
Pierre-Moise also manages local groups of women whom TTFF helps to establish as breadfruit product vendors in the Women’s Empowerment Program.
